Student FAQs

  Why is my school not on this site?
To make this site operate in the most intuitive manner, we must enter a lot of information for each school. Therefore, we add schools as requested. If you would like to add your school, send us your school email address or your regular email address and school name by clicking below.

How do I find a roommate or someone to take over my lease?
That is something we can help with! Once you have rated the rental you need to find a roommate for or that you need to sublet, click the "your reviews" tab (must be logged in). Under the rental’s profile picture there is a drop down box, choose the appropriate time period you would like the “sublet flag” to stay available and click “list for sublet”. There, you are done! And, when the room gets filled because of this awesome feature you follow the same procedure, only this time the button says "un-list room availability". The flag will automatically expire after the time period is up as well.

  • Immediately = listed for 2 weeks
  • This Term = listed for 2 months
  • Next Term = listed for 5 months
What happens when I list the room as "sublet needed"?
Other students will see that you flagged the rental this way and they will contact you through our message system and send a message to your RateMyStudentRental.com inbox if they are interested. And, then you will be able to find a room mate so you don't have to pay extra for those empty rooms in your rental!
Why is it important that I rate my rental?
It is very important that you rate your rental! Ratings can only be submitted by students and to make RateMyStudentRental.com the Ultimate Student Housing Tool there needs to be plenty of reviews on your campus. The more students who are using RateMyStudentRental.com the easier it will be for you to find student housing that fits your needs and find a roommate or sublet a room. You will also see an improved campus and better student housing because landlords will now what you are expecting!
Should I rate a rental even if someone else already rated it?
YES! Each rating contributes to the overall/average rating of the rental. We want to hear all angles of each tenants experience.

Landlord FAQs

How do I add my rental?
Talk to your past and/or current student tenants. Students register, add and rate the property based off of their point of view and their experiences and then we contact the property owner via snail mail. At that time the property owner will receive a confirmation code to access the Landlord part of the site.
How do you know where to send the confirmation number?
We take the address of the property rated and through public records with HomeInfoMax we receive the address of the property owner, which is the address we send the confirmation code to.
Why do you do use snail mail?
This is the best way we could come up with at this time to assure that the right people were being entered into the transaction. Data integrity is one of our key values - what good is information if it is false?
What if the student entered incorrect information about the rental, like rent or whether or not utilities are included?
As the landlord you can note these discrepancies on your rentals profile page and then the public will see "what the landlord said" and "what the student said". For free you can verify details about your rental, this feature is located under the “rental services” tab when you are logged in as a landlord.
Why should I register?
It is free to register, no commitments. As a registered landlord you will not only have access to your rentals profile but you will also be able to communicate with students and landlords with ease, through our integrated message system.
Will I get a lot of unwanted e-mail messages?
No! You will not get unnecessary correspondences that clog up your e-mail inbox. You will receive a notification to your e-mail inbox when another registered user messages you through RateMyStudentRental.com. We do occasionally send out updates that affect your membership or services but we try to keep them as limited as possible.
Will my name and rental be associated with a registered renters list?
No, we are completely independent and we do not sell information that is given to us as according to our Privacy Policy.

What’s with “Sometimes, you don’t want to get screwed”?
First off, this tagline applies to students and landlords, no one likes getting screwed in a deal, especially over housing, which is unavoidable for students and landlords – it’s your business! Second off it’s memorable and it does get to the point.
